Short Inca Trail – 2 Days
This shorter trek is ideal for those who want to experience the Inca Trail, yet are not in ideal physical condition. This trek is at a much lower altitude and is far less strenuous. It is also a great option for visitors wanting to get some trekking in their trip to Peru, yet have limited time. The short Inca Trail, or Sacred Trail, meets up with the last part of the classic trek to fit in the amazing ruins of Wiñay Wayna and the cumulating Sun Gate leading you to Machu Picchu.
Day 1: Ollantaytambo – Aguas Calientes (B, L)
After a very early rise, you will be picked up from your Ollantaytambo hotel to catch the short train ride to the start of the shortened Inca Trail, Km 104. From here we will begin our hike up to the ruins of Chachabamba where your guide will give you a brief tour and explain to you the function and history of the site. From here there is a gentle, three hour climb through a dense cloud forest where you can observe gorgeous local flora including orchids. You will reach the amazing site of Wiñay Wayna (Forever Young) where you will have time to explore on your own as well as your guide. Continuing on through this beautiful exotic forest, you will reach a set of steep stairs that will bring you to the Sun Gate, where you will find your first magnificant view of Machu Picchu. From here, you will make your way down to a view-point to watch the sunset over the ruins. You will take the bus down to Aguas Calientes where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Machu Picchu – Cusco
An early rise in Aguas Calientes in order to be able to catch the earliest bus to the ruins, to avoid the crowds that come in later in the morning. Recently named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is the ultimate desination for any traveller, as it is rich in history, culture, and lies in an amazing and iconic setting. This is easily the most impressive pre-Colombian city in the world with its amazing stone work and mystical setting in a hidden spot in the Andes. You will get a guided tour of this lost city with an English-speaking guide who will help you to understand the interesting history of the site and the Inca people, as well as the various theories of the purpose of the city. Following the tour, you will have free time to explore this expansive site. Wander through ancient cobblestone paths leading to temples, homes, warehouses and a large square – all surrounded by dramatic terraces cut into the steep mountainsides. In addition, you have the option of taking the challenging hike up Huayna Picchu where you will have the most beautiful, panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Once you have had your fill of these amazing ruins, in the late afternoon you will make your way back down to Aguas Calientes where you will have the rest of the afternoon free to enjoy the hot springs, various hiking opportunities, and the delicious dining options available in this quaint town. In the late afternoon you will be transferred to the train to return to Cusco.
