Cusco – Cusco Ruins on Horseback – Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu
DAY 1: CUSCO
You will be picked up when you arrive to Cusco and transferred to your hotel by a helpful View Peru staff member who will be happy to answer all of your questions and brief you on your itinerary. After the chance to relax in your hotel for a bit, you will be brought on a walking tour of the ancient capital of the Incas – Cusco. This city is small enough that it can easily be explored thoroughly by foot, and walking around gives you the chance to experience the incredible culture and history on every inch of these city streets. Your English-speaking guide will bring you to various sites, including the Cathedral and Korincancha (Temple of the Sun) which is a colonial building built ontop of an Inca temple. The tour also brings you to the bustling San Pedro Market where you can get a real view of Cuscquanian life as you watch locals buy everything from vegetables to cow hearts. After the tour you have the evening to relax and enjoy the great nightlife and dining scene of Cusco.
DAY 2: HORSEBACK RIDING CUSCO CITY RUINS (B)
After breakfast at your hotel, you will be picked up to begin your tour on horseback of the ancient ruins on the outskirts of Cusco. Your Peruvian Paso horse will guide you through this gorgeous hillside visiting four great archaeological sites. First, you will visit the large Saqsayhuaman fortress that sits watching over Cusco and is still regarded as a highly spiritual place. Your horse will bring you next to the Qenko rock sanctuary that used to be the site of mummifications and sacrifices, it is believed. Riding further down the hill towards the Sacred Valley, you will discover the Red Fortress of Puca Pucara that was used as a military station and an administrative center defending the Cusco area in ancient times. Finally, you will reach Tambomachay Inca baths made up of basins filled by fresh spring water. It is believed that this used to be sort of a spa for travelling elite Incas. At all of the ruins you will get a chance to get off of your horse to explore on foot. Be sure to take advantage of the endless photo opportunities on this trip, as the horse paths take you through gorgeous forest and countryside. After this amazing ruins tour, you will be transferred back to your hotel where you will have the rest of the afternoon free to explore more of Cusco.
DAY 3: SACRED VALLEY (B, L)
After breakfast in your Cusco hotel, you will be picked up to start your Sacred Valley tour. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a chain of fertile farmlands and quaint towns unmoved by time, and is a great preparation to get you even more excited for Machu Picchu. Your tour will start in the market town of Pisac, about an hour outside of Cusco. Here you will get to experience the bustling market, where local natives come from all over the valley to sell their gorgeous handicrafts. This is a great opportunity to get the best, most authentic souvenirs from your trip. We will also visit the ruins on the mountain above Pisac that are largely overlooked, they are expansive and impressive as is Machu Picchu. From here we will have a buffet lunch made completely from ingredients grown here in the Sacred Valley, before moving on to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo. This town is the best surviving example of Incan architecture and was never conquered by the Spanish. You will have the afternoon free to stroll around these ancient cobblestone streets, visit the ruins overlooking the town, and enjoy some of the many dining options. You will be transferred to your hotel for the night.
DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU (B)
Today you will travel to the feature point of your trip to Peru, Machu Picchu! Early in the morning you will be picked up at your hotel and brought to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. This amazing train journey takes you through rural landscapes outlined by gorgeous towering mountians, and descends into the lush cloud forest that hides Machu Picchu. Recently named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is the ultimate desination for any traveller, as it is rich in history, culture, and lies in an amazing and iconic setting. This is easily the most impressive pre-Colombian city in the world with its amazing stone work and mystical setting in a hidden spot in the Andes. You will get a guided tour of this lost city with an English-speaking guide who will help you to understand the interesting history of the site and the Inca people, as well as the various theories of the purpose of the city. Following the tour, you will have free time to explore this expansive site. Wander through ancient cobblestone paths leading to temples, homes, warehouses and a large square – all surrounded by dramatic terraces cut into the steep mountainsides. In addition, you have the option of taking the challenging hike up Huayna Picchu where you will have the most beautiful, panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Once you have had your fill of these amazing ruins, in the late afternoon you will make your way back down to Aguas Calientes to board the trian for your return trip to Cusco. At the train station you will be picked up by View Peru and transferred back to your hotel for the night.
