DAY 3: CUSCO – SACRED VALLEY (B, L, D)
After a great breakfast at your hotel, you will have an early morning flight to Cusco from Lima. When you arrive in Cusco, you will be picked up by a personable, English-speaking guide who will bring you to the Sacred Valley to begin your tour in the land of the Incas. The Sacred Valley is at a much lower altitude than Cusco, therefore starting here will help you get acclimatized to the high-altitude Andes. Here, you will experience gorgeous scenery of farmlands, terraced mountians, snow-capped peaks in the distance, and traditional Andean life that has not changed for centuries. The first stop will be in the ancient Inca village of Ollantaytambo. Here, you will have time to wander the cobblestone streets winding through Inca walls, as well time to visit the fortress ruins overlooking the town. In Ollantaytambo we will have a delicious lunch made out of ingredients grown and cultivated locally in the Sacred Valley, using ancient, sustainable methods. Following lunch, we will travel to the colonial village of Pisac where we will visit the famous craft market where natives from all over the valley come to sell their gorgeous handcrafted goods. In addition, you will visit the impressive Pisac ruins on the mountian in the town, where your private guide will tell you all of the history of the ruins and the modern town. After Pisac, you will get to visit a development project just across the river in a town called Taray. This picturesque Sacred Valley town retains its traditional ways of life, most of the families making a living farming off of the land as their ancestors have been for centuries. In 2010 horrible floods destroyed much of the town and affects are still felt today, especially with the children. Because many farms were damaged or livelihoods lost, children are needed as extra help in the home meaning they cannot attend school regularly and miss out on important play time. Here, you will visit the youth development project called Sonco Wasi, which seeks to fill in these gaps by providing education and recreational activities to the children of Taray. Your visit to Sonco Wasi gives you a chance to give back to a local community. You can either lead an activity or a class, or you can simply play with these amazing children. In the evening you will be transferred to your luxury Urubamba hotel where a 5-star dinner will be awaiting your arrival.
