Complete Peru Tour – 14 Days

A View Peru staff member will be waiting for your arrival at the Lima airport, from where they will transport you to the hotel of your choice. Any questions you have will be answered and you will be briefed on your itinerary by your assistant. You have the evening to relax in your hotel to prepare yourself for the exciting tour ahead.

Today you will be brought on a city tour of Lima, Peru’s capital as well as most modern and largest city. Lima was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991 and it is a great introduction to Peru as it has drastic contrasts between modernity and its ancient and colonial heritage. An English-speaking guide will bring you to various colonial and modern sites throughout this sprawling city. Visiting the Main Square, the Cathedral, and the Catacombs in the San Francisco Covenant you will be immersed in the city’s rich colonial past. Contrastingly, next you will visit the hip residential areas of Miraflores and San Isidro where you will see the modern face of Peru with the various high end shopping malls, eateries, and bars. After the tour, you have the afternoon and night free to further explore and enjoy the thriving nightlife of Lima.

Day 3: Lima – Nazca (B)

Begin your day with a good breakfast at your hotel to prepare you for a  long day of travelling to the desert town of Nazca. This six hour journey takes you along the coastal desert which is almost an unearthly sight, travelling past dusty towns and expansive desert plain. Arrival in Nazca in the afternoon, which you will have free to explore this small town and get a bite to eat.

Day 4: Nazca – Arequipa (B, L)

These ancient etchings in the desert were made by the ancient Nazca culture simply by removing the reddish stones to reveal the light colored sand below. Figures range from mamals, birds, and humans, to mysterious lines and geographic figures. Theories as to the purpose of these figures include making them for the gods to admire and astronomical guides – and of course a few theorists believe they were created by alien life due to their eerie and unearthly design.  After your flight you will return to your hotel for breakfast before you begin the journey to Arequipa further to the South. Arrival in Arequipa in the evening that you will have free to find one of the many great dinner options.

Day 5:  Arequipa (B)

From Uros, you will continue to the island of Taquile where you will be greeted by locals dressed in their gorgeous traditional woven clothing. This city is small enough that it can easily be explored thoroughly by foot, and walking around gives you the chance to experience the incredible culture and history on every inch of these city streets. Your English-speaking guide will bring you to various sites, including the Cathedral and Korincancha (Temple of the Sun) which is a colonial building built ontop of an Inca temple. The tour also brings you to the bustling San Pedro Market where you can get a real view of Cuscquanian life as you watch locals buy everything from vegetables to cow hearts. The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a chain of fertile farmlands and quaint towns unmoved by time, and is a great preparation to get you even more excited for Machu Picchu. Your tour will start in the market town of Pisac, about an hour outside of Cusco. Here you will get to experience the bustling market, where local natives come from all over the valley to sell their gorgeous handicrafts. This is a great opportunity to get the best, most authentic souvenirs from your trip. We will also visit the ruins on the mountain above Pisac that are largely overlooked, they are expansive and impressive as is Machu Picchu. From here we will have a buffet lunch made completely from ingredients grown here in the Sacred Valley, before moving on to the ancient town of Ollantaytambo. This town is the best surviving example of Incan architecture and was never conquered by the Spanish. You will have the afternoon free to stroll around these ancient cobblestone streets, visit the ruins overlooking the town, and enjoy some of the many dining options. You will be transferred to your hotel for the night.

Day 12: Machu Picchu (B)

Today you will travel to the feature point of your trip to Peru, Machu Picchu! Early in the morning you will be picked up at your hotel and brought to the train station to board the train to Aguas Calientes. This amazing train journey takes you through rural landscapes outlined by gorgeous towering mountians, and descends into the lush cloud forest that hides Machu Picchu. Recently named one of the Seven New Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu is the ultimate desination for any traveller, as it is rich in history, culture, and lies in an amazing and iconic setting. This is easily the most impressive pre-Colombian city in the world with its amazing stone work and mystical setting in a hidden spot in the Andes. You will get a guided tour of this lost city with an English-speaking guide who will help you to understand the interesting history of the site and the Inca people, as well as the various theories of the purpose of the city. Following the tour, you will have free time to explore this expansive site. Wander through ancient cobblestone paths leading to temples, homes, warehouses and a large square – all surrounded by dramatic terraces cut into the steep mountainsides. In addition, you have the option of taking the challenging hike up Huayna Picchu where you will have the most beautiful, panoramic view of Machu Picchu. Once you have had your fill of these amazing ruins, in the late afternoon you will make your way back down to Aguas Calientes where you will have the rest of the day free to enjoy the hot springs, various hiking opportunities, and the delicious dining options available in this quaint town.

You will enjoy breakfast in your Aguas Calientes hotel, followed by a transfer to the train back to Ollantaytambo where you can have lunch. After lunch, you will be taken off of the tourist map to the small town of Taray, just across the Urubamba River from Pisac. This picturesque Sacred Valley town retains its traditional ways of life, most of the families making a living farming off of the land as their ancestors have been for centuries. In 2010 horrible floods destroyed much of the town and affects are still felt today, especially with the children. Because many farms were damaged or livelihoods lost, children are needed as extra help in the home meaning they cannot attend school regularly and miss out on important play time. Here, you will visit the youth development project called Sonco Wasi, which seeks to fill in these gaps by providing education and recreational activities to the children of  Taray. Your visit to Sonco Wasi gives you a chance to give back to a local community. You can either lead an activity or a class, or you can simply play with these amazing children. After this touching experience, you will return to Cusco where you will enjoy a delicous dinner accompanied by a show.

Day 14: Return to Lima (B)

After breakfast in your Cusco hotel, you will be transferred to the airport for your return flight to Lima.
